The first charades (charade - conversation) appeared in the VI century in Symphony - "Riddles". Since the XVIII century, they came into fashion with the French (Magazine "Mercure de France"). In the Middle Ages charades were called wagons on two wheels. Later, in the lexicon of feudal lords, who indulged in verbal entertainment after a hearty dinner, this word began to mean "a whole lot of chatter."
The Russian history of these fates also began in the eighteenth century. The publication of that time with the answer "smooth + bone = smoothness" has survived. In the next century, since 1845, charades have been regularly placed on the pages of the St. Petersburg magazine "Illustration" ("mol + e = Moliere", "sex + tina = poltina", etc.).
In general, the charade is a riddle composed in verse, in it the conceived word breaks up into several separate parts, each of which is an independent word, usually monosyllabic. For example: "whale + spruce", "mouse + yak", "wine + hail", "steam + ys", etc. Having solved each part of the charade and having combined these parts together, it is easy to learn the intended word.

The first word above the teapot melts,
The second - the pope grows above the lip.
A whole - the wind blows the sea
And in the placard we are invited with you.

We determine the meaning of the first word in this charade: the "steam" seems to melt over the kettle. Then determine the meaning of the second word: most likely, the pope's lips are growing - this is "us." Adding both words, we get an answer to the charade - "sail", which the wind blows the sea and invites in swimming.
However, it is far from always possible to compose a word from completed independent words, as in the above example. Often it happens that in compound words either there are not enough letters, or extra letters are obtained. In such cases, in the charade it is indicated that to such and such a part, the syllable must be added a letter, taken away or replaced by one letter of the other.

Determine the first syllable of the charade - note "fa", then determine the second syllable - the note "salt". Adding both syllables together, we get the answer of the charade - "beans".

We determine the first part of the charade: it remains on the ground - this, apparently, is a "trace". Then we determine the second part: mistakes in long work are given "experience." Adding both parts, we get the answer to the charade - "Pathfinder".

The constituent parts of the charade are individual small words, of which the total is a larger word. For the riddle-charade is given a description of each of its parts, and then - the meaning of the whole word. And not always with this word is broken according to syllables.
The word "charada" comes from the French "charade" - the word that you need to find. This last word-guess is broken into parts having an independent meaning. Each part of the main word is usually also ciphered with verse lines.
Charades are described in ancient literature, and they reached their heyday in the salon culture of the XVII-XVIII centuries, and then disappeared from literature, remaining only as a game.

Here, for example, as in the verse you can encode the word "sail":
Three letters are hanging with clouds,
Two are visible on the face of a man,
And the whole sometimes whitens "In the fog of the blue sea."

Syllables in charades can be any part of speech: verbs, nouns, adjectives, unlike other puzzles. Most often, charades are represented in verse. Thus the conceived word breaks up into monosyllables.

In Russian, you can find more than 6000 common nouns, which can easily be decomposed into syllables. But not all of them can be used to form a charade. Thus, for example, the syllable of the HKK in the word macrostructure means the people in Vietnam

In folklore, charades are almost unknown; in written literature (with awareness of the visible division of words) were popular in the salon culture of the 17-18 centuries.
